Heiliger Sand

The Heiliger Sand of Worms is regarded as oldest Jewish cemetery of Europe. It is estimated that it was arranged at the time where the first Synagog was built in 1034.

Oldest tomb stone, that of Jakob ha Bach Ur, date of 1076. In all, the cemetery counts about 2000 tombs. After the installation of a new Jewish cemetery apart from the city in 1911, one ceased little by little using Heiliger Sand. The last funeral proceeded in the Années 1930.

Close to the entry, the tomb stones of Meir von Rothenburg (deceased in 1293) and of Alexander Ben Solomon Wimpfen (deceased in 1307) belong to the most important memorials of the cemetery; Jewish visitors come from the whole world to see them. Other famous tomb stones are located in the part called the “valley of the rabbis” ( Rabbinental ) and its surroundings. One finds there inter alia the tombs of the rabbis Nathan Ben Issak (deceased in 1333), Jakob Ben Moses haLevi Molin (also called MaHaRil), (deceased in 1427), Meir Ben Isaak (deceased in 1511) and Elia Loanz (also called Baal-Schem) (deceased in 1636).

The point of view of Martin Buber

In its work River mouth gekündigt STI to mir nicht of 1933, Martin Buber describes a walk in this cemetery:

“I walk while looking at the cathedral, full with joy. Then I go to the Jewish cemetery opposite. It is composed of stones without form, of through, in any direction. I settle there, looks in top this splendid harmony since this tangled up cemetery, and for me, it was as if I raised the eyes from Israel towards the church. ”
