Heian-kyō
, was the imperial capital of the Japan between 794 and 1868. It represents today the center of the town of Kyōto.
The emperor Kammu establishes his capital in there 794, moving the Imperial Court from the neighbouring city of Nagaoka-kyō. The city remained the center of political decision during all the Period Heian, until the year 1185 and the rise of the capacity of the Clan Minamoto, thus establishing the Shogunat de Kamakura.
Although the political power remained with the hands of the samurai during three different Shogunat S, Heian preserved the seat of the imperial capacity until the latter is moved with Tōkyō in 1868. As there does not exist law making of the latter the capital of Japan, some support that Kyōto remains the true capital today.
