Hedjaz

The Hedjaz is an area of the North-West of current the Saudi Arabia; its main city is Djeddah, but the most known city is Mecque, like Médine.

This area was controlled in turn during the major part of its history by the regional powers, the Egypt or the Ottoman Empire; it was nevertheless briefly independent at the beginning of the 20th century, when it raised against the Ottoman Empire at the time of a rebellion encouraged by Lawrence of Arabia during the First World War. Husseyn ibn Ali, Sherif of Mecque, proclaimed its independence in 1916.

In 1924, the authority of the sherif was reversed by the Ibn Saud, reigning on the nation close to the Nejd. This annexation allowed the creation of the modern Saudi Arabia in 1932.
