The Hebraic Université of Jerusalem (in Hebrew האוניברסיטההעבריתבירושלים pronunciation hā' Universitah hā `Ivrith bYirūšāláyim) usually called HUJI is one of the principal universities in Israel, whose majority of the campuses are with Jerusalem.

It is one of the eight universities in Israel, and she is internationally recognized like member of the hundred best academic institutions in the world.

History

The project of a university where teaching would be made in Hebrew took form relatively early in imaginary chiefs of the movement Zionist. Still it was necessary that this language knows a real revival. It is thing made at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, and other important figures of the Zionism. The creation of the university was proposed in 1884 with the conference of the company Hibbat Zion of Kattowitz. Large to support this idea was Albert Einstein, a Physicien Juif, which later bequeathed all its work and its writings to the university. They are kept today with the library Albert Einstein of the university.

The stone founder of the university was posed in 1918, and, seven years later, on April 1st 1925, the campus of the Mont Scopus of Jerusalem was open during a ceremony of official reception where were present, among others, leaders of the Jewish world, including the governor, Chaim Weizmann, distinguished academician, as well as communal figures, and English dignitaries, including Sir Arthur James Balfour, Allenby, and Sir Herbert Samuel. The first chancellor was Doctor Judah Magnes.

As of 1947, the University grows to become a large research and educational establishment. During the war of independence which the young State of Israel in 1948 knows, the university is the subject of a rough fight, because its localization in the North-East of the future capital makes it particularly vulnerable. The Scopus Mount is insulated in 1948, and the university finds Jordanian side after the cease-fire. When the government Jordanien refused the Accords of Armistice of 1949 and refused the Israëlien access to the campus of the Scopus Mount, it is forced to move with Givat RAM, in the Western part of Jerusalem, and takes again its normal functioning only in 1953.

A few years later, at the same time as the Medical Organization Hadassah, a campus of medical sciences was built in the district of Jerusalem of Ein Kerem in South-west.

In 1967, the students, 12.500, are dispersed in the campuses of Jerusalem and the Faculty of Agriculture in Rehovot.

After the War the six day old, the Hebraic university finds its initial buildings, which are rebuilt in 1981, the buildings of origin having been damaged by the engagements. The manpower of this university progressed constantly, and passes the bar of the 23000 students in 2003.

The University again was touched by violence on July 31st 2002, when an Israeli Arab terrorist (resident of Jerusalem-Is) exploded a bomb in the cafeteria " Frank Sinatra " crammed per hour of the lunch.

New people - five Israëliens, three citizens American, and a Franco-Israëlien citizen - were killed by the explosion and much out of others wounded. Hamas asserted the responsibility for this attack.
