The Hebei (河北; Pinyin : héběi ; literally : in the north of the yellow river ) is a province located at the east of the China.

This province, as well as the Hunan, is a dismemberment of the old province of Huguang. Under the Ming, it bore the name of Beizhili (EFEO: EP-Tché-Li ), meaning “directly managed septentrional Territory (by the Imperial Court)”, in opposition to the “southernmost territory” formed by the current provinces of Jiangsu and Anhui. When the Manchu dynasty Qing seized the power in 1644, it removed the southernmost counterpart, and Hebei was simply indicated Zhili , that is to say “directly managed Territory”.

It is not that in 1928, qu ' it took its current name (which it had already briefly carried under the Tang), in order to reflect the fact that it from now on is equipped with a regular provincial administration.
