History
The site of Heathers knew an occupation on the top of the hill of Avison as of the 3rd century or 4th century. Heathers is the typical case of the old borough castral, as one finds of them many examples in Lorraine. The castle was based by the duke of Lorraine at the 10th century on the essartées grounds of the field of Champ, after this one became dedicated chapter of Remiremont, which ordered these clearings in the valley of the Vologne. The city then developed the hill below supporting the castle; there is of it a first mention in the files of the chapter romarimontain towards 1189 under the name of Brueriis with the mention of a donation made with a Lorraine abbey by " Gerardus de Brueriis ". The emperor Henri VI remained with the castle in 1196, as well as the duke Mathieu II of Lorraine in the years 1230 -40, but the borough starts to take truly importance about the middle of the 13th century when the duchess regent Catherine de Limbourg establishes a Tonlieu there; it becomes a true city when the duke Ferry III, wire of the latter, the met, with Arches under the blow of the Loi of Beaumont. From October 26th to 30th 1944, Bruyères was the theater of combat which opposed the 442 RCT ( 442nd Regimental Combat TEAM ), American body made up of nippo-American originating in Hawaii, and the German troops. This unit had received for mission of releasing an American battalion encircled since October 24th. At the end of the battle, one counted in this unit 800 victims, that is to say almost half of manpower. In remembering these combat and release the city, the towns of Heathers and Honolulu were twinned in 1961. The city was decorated with the Military Cross 1939-1945.
