The hearing is the hole cut in the Sounding board of the string instruments, which allows the air which it contains to be in relation to the surrounding air, therefore with the its to leave the Caisse of resonance.

On the Violin, the viola or the Violoncello, there are two hearing, laid out symmetrically on both sides of the central axis formed by the cords. They are in form of F such as it is drawn in music on a partition.

On the Hurdy-gurdy with wheel, they are in the shape of a crescent of the moon dug by two smaller, and are located at the level of the rope-maker.

On a traditional guitar, it is the central hole bordered by the rosette which plays this part.
