Health Level 7

Health Level 7 ( HL7 ) is a Standard which defines a format for the exchanges computerized of clinical data, financial and administrative between hospital information systems.

Initially American, this format is exported and tended to be essential like international standard for this type of information.

Name HL7

Figure 7 of HL' 7 is not related to a number of version, as one could think it. That states simply that it is a language which functions on the level of layer 7, i.e. the layer application, of OSI model.

That means that HL7 does not have to take into account the considerations of safety of the exchanges, or those of the transport of the message (this being ensured by layers moreover low level like SSL for safety or TCP for the data transmission for example).
