Headlight of the Pillar

The headlight of the Pillar belongs to the commune of Noirmoutier-in-the Island, the Vendée.

Managed since 1905 by the Service of the headlights and beacons of Saint-Nazaire, in Loire-Atlantique, this headlight, built on the island of the Pillar, belonged to the device of southern beaconing of the estuary of the Loire.

The island of the Pillar is a site protected from the Conservatoire of the littoral.

History

In 1829, construction of a cylindrical tower in stone masonry of size of 29,50 m (32,50 m above the sea) on a square base. It is equipped with 4 minutes a varied white fixed light in 4 minutes by glares preceded and follow-ups by short eclipses.

The current headlight was automated in 1996; it is telecontrolled from Saint-Nazaire.

Its lantern, of big size, is painted in red.

On the south-eastern face of the headlight, a half-lantern installed to 7 m above the ground, exempts fire scintillating continuous of red sector.

At side, the old cylindrical tower, is surmounted old radio beacon.
