Headlight of Portzic

The headlight of Portzic is located at the north-eastern end of the Goulet of Brest (Finistere, France). It is the Phare nearest to the town of Brest.

History

The headlight of Portzic was built on an army ground in 1848, at the same time as the headlight of the Small Pussy, which precedes it in north by the Narrow part.

It was electrified in 1953 and was automated in 1984. With the outlet of the narrow part of Brest with dimensions splits, the headlight faced the Pointe of the Spaniards.

Characteristics

  • Fires: 1 fire principal with sector with 2 screenings and periodicity of 10 seconds (2 seconds glare then 6 seconds glare), accompanied by 2 fires scintillating white directional in direction of Narrow part, one continuous (a glare a second, is the “Northern” signal, indicating to the navigator that it is in the north of the channel), the other with 6 scintillations (one a second) and a long glare, that is to say the “Southern” signal, indicating to the navigator that it is in the south of the channel.

A station of Sémaphore with watchtower is installed at its base since 1987. It controls traffic the sea entering and outgoing of the Rade of Brest and is permanently occupied.
