Geography
The headlight of Chassiron , perched on a rock cliff, is located at the northern end of the island of Oléron, meadows of the town of Saint-Denis-in Oléron. The headlight makes it possible to the sailors to return in water of the Pertuis of Antioche, place sown of reefs and considered for its many shipwrecks.
History
The headlight was completed in 1836, and its beam was visible up to 40 kilometers.
Currently
Today its eight beams of light are visible up to 55 kilometers in clear weather, thanks to its lantern located at 43 meters with the top of the ground. The headlight has 224 steps from where one can admire the towns of La Rochelle, the Ile de Ré, the Fort Boyard as well as a northern part of the island of Oléron.
Tourism
The headlight of Chassiron is open 7 days over 7,365 days per annum:- from July 1st to August 31st, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- from April 1st to the 10 a.m. September 30th to 12:15 and 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
- from October 1st to the 0 a.m. March 31st to 12:15 and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The tariff is of 2,50 € (adult tariff) - 10 mn to assemble the 224 steps of Staircase spiral and to discover a splendid panorama on the Ile de Ré, the coasts of the La Rochelle and all the north of the island of Oléron.
