Head office of the national police force

The head office of the national police force (DGPN), placed under the aegis of the ministry for the interior, supervises in particular the French Police.

The law of orientation and coding relative to the safety of January 1995 stated the priority missions of the National police force, confirmed by the Loi of orientation and programming for the internal security of August 2002.

Missions

The DGPN has the role:
  • to ensure the safety of the people, the goods and the institutions
  • to control the migratory flux and to fight against illegal immigration
  • to fight against organized criminality, the great delinquency and drug
  • to protect the country against the external threat and terrorism
  • to maintain the law and order

Organization

To conclude its missions, it is based on eight great directions, three great services as several units which are directly attached to him.

Note: To note that for Paris, the whole of these missions are entrusted to the Police headquarter of Paris.

Units depending directly on the managing director of the national police force

  • the mission of fight against drugs (MILAD)
  • the unit of coordination of the fight anti-terrorist (UCLAT)
  • security service of the ministry for interior (SSMI)
  • automobile central service (SCA)
  • the research unit, assistance, intervention and dissuasion (RAID)
  • service from information and communication of the national police force (SICOP)
  • the delegation with the victims (DAV)
  • historical service of the national police force
  • operational service of day before national police force (SVOPN)

Means

Average materials

The head office of the national police force has average materials in adequacy with the whole of the missions which are entrusted to him:
  • individual armament and terrestrial collective
  • screen printed and standardized vehicle of intervention
  • transport aircraft and helicopter of monitoring and intervention

Human means

The head office of the national police force is made up of various personnel:
  • personal of the active services: approximately 145.000 personal civils servant
  • of the personal administrative services
  • of the services techinic and scientific

Director

Since June 2007, the new managing director of the national police force is Frederic Péchenard which succeeded Michel Gaudin become prefect of police of Paris.

This nomination illustrates well the paradox of a police headquarter placed, in theory, under the orders of the DGPN and whose management position is in fact more coveted than that of presumedly higher sound.
