Hayam Wuruk
Hayam Wuruk (1334 - 1389), whose name of reign is Rajasanagara , is most known of the kings of Majapahit, a kingdom of the east of Java in Indonesia. Majapahit reaches its apogee under its reign (1350-89).
Its name is known for us in particular by the Nagarakertagama , a poem epic in old Javanese writes under its reign by certain Prapanca, and two texts written in means-Javanese , therefore probably in XVIe century. The Pararaton or " Deliver of Rois" enumerate the genealogy of the kings of Singasari, the predecessor of Majapahit, and Majapahit itself. The Kidung Sunda , a chanson de geste, tells a history of unhappy love affair between Hayam Wuruk and the princess Dyah Pitaloka, girl of the king of Sunda in the west of Java.
The Nagarakertagama speaks in praise of Hayam Wuruk and known as of him qu'" it is Shiva and Bouddha " (the two worships were practiced in Majapahit). It draws up a list of almost 100 " regions tributaires" of Majapahit. In addition to Bali, Madura and Sunda, this list goes from Pahang on the Malayan Péninsule to " Gurun" in the Moluques, while passing by Malayu (Jambi) with Sumatra and " Bakulapura" with Borneo. Put on the chart, it covers about the territory of current the Indonesia.
Actually, the territory directly controlled by Majapahit consisted in the fertile valley of the Brantas river. A certain number of areas of Java were given in prerogative to lords connected to the king. They extended towards the west to the country from Mataram in the center from Java (old ground of the dynasty of Sanjaya which built Prambanan). The areas in the south and the east of Majapahit, in particular Blambangan, were regarded as marginal.
When it reaches the throne, at the 16 years age, after the abdication of his mother the queen Tribhuwana Wijayottungga Dewi (1328 -50), the true power behind this one is the mahapatih (Prime Minister) Gajah Mada, whose name is known to us by the Pararaton . With Gajah Mada, the reign of Hayam Wuruk is one period of peace, of cultural development and commercial good relationships. It will be however sullied by one period with rebellion with Java where an attempt at reconstitution of the Sriwijaya in 1377 is held. Gajah Mada rents the services of a poet named Prapanca to compose the Nagarakertagama . The personality of Gajah Mada is so important for the kingdom that when he dies in 1364, perhaps poisoned by Hayam Wuruk anxious of its capacity, the functions which he occupied are distributed on four ministers.
