Have-Khanoum

Have-Khanoum or Ay Khanum (literally Uzbek “Lady the Moon” in ), was an ancient city located today in the North-East of the Afghanistan in the province of Kondoz close the border tadjike. It was founded at fourth century BC by Alexandre Large the in his road towards the India. The city was called the Alexandria of Oxus by Ptolémée and perhaps called later Eucratidia . It is located at the Confluent river Amou-Daria (in the past Oxus ) and river Kokcha (latitude NR 37° 10 ' 10" ; longitude E 69° 24 ' 30").

The site was excavated by a mission of the French archaeological Délégation in Afghanistan, directed by Paul Bernard, between 1964 and 1978, and also by archeologists Russian S. research of the DAFA revealed a perfect hellenism in the organization of the city as well as the presence of a theater, a gymnasium and very many Corinthian capitals. The excavations were abandoned after the release of the war of Afghanistan of 1979 during which the site was plundered and was used as battle field preserving only one very weak part of the material of origin. The archaeological missions began again only in 2003, after the fall of the Taliban S.
