Haut-Sauerland

The district of Haut-Sauerland , in German Hochsauerlandkreis , is a administrative division German, located in the Land of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia.

Geographical location

The district of Haut-Sauerland is located at the south-east of Rhineland-of-North-Westphalia in the mountains of the Sauerland . The territory is mountainous, the highest mounts of the Land are here. The district has limits with the districts of Siegen-Wittgenstein, Olpe, Mark, Soest, Paderborn and Höxter as well as the district hessois of Waldeck-Frankenberg.

History

The district was created on January 1st 1975 by law of November 5th, 1974 by amalgamating the old districts of Arnsberg, Brilon and Meschede.

Communes

The district counts 12 communes including 10 cities (population of June 30th, 2005).

Meschede is the chief town of arrondissment, but Arnsberg is the chief town of the district ( Regierungsbezirk ).
