Origin of the name

The first mention of Lessoc could be well in the sign of Rougemont, written in 1115, which indicates the gift made by the count Wilerius, with the priory of Rougemont, of a ground held by a serf, Martinus del Suc. It would not be there an old form of the name of the current village, which was called Lessoz in 1231, Soz in 1237 and Lessot about 1352. The name probably has an origin préromane.

History

To the Middle Ages, the locality belonged to the Gruyere county, under the banner and châtellenie of Montsalvens. At the 12th century, the Lords of Corbières had many goods on the territory of Lessoc. They yielded them in 1278 to Pierre II of Gruyères. Released from the mortmain in 1396, its inhabitants had their particular justice, however dependant on the banneret of Gruyères. The presence of a vault located close to the church current and devoted to holy Martin is attested since 1365. The village which probably depended on the parish of Broc until the 12th century - concerned then the parish of Grandvillard of which he wanted to be detached as of the end from the 16th century. But effective separation intervened only in 1643 when the church was built. Several careers were exploited, of which one of tuff. But the most known stone is the “marble” of Lessoc, a limestone gray-white veined of green It was used much for construction in the village and the area. It is of this stone that one built in 1796 the octagonal fountain whose legend is known with far.
