Its discovery was announced by Scott S. Sheppard, David C. Jewitt, Jan Kleyna, and Brian G. Marsden the May 4th 2005, according to observations made between the December 12th 2004 and the March 11th 2005.

It bears the name of Hati, wolf giant of mythology norse, wire of Fenrir and twin brother of Skoll.
