Hatamoto
A hatamoto (旗本), in the feudal Japan, is a guard official of a Daimyō or of a Shogun. Characterized by the use of the Nodachi , they were often used like a force of elite and a fast reinforcement.
During the Period Edo, the hatamoto were Samurai S which were vassal direct shogun, and had as a task to be mobilized on order of the shogun. Contrary to the daimyō , they did not have obligation of Sankin-kôtai (参勤交代), and had a field of less than 10.000 Koku . Their fields were grouped around Edo. They were at the same time feared and respected by the other samurais for their direct allegiance with the shogun, but this one also implied that they had a level more raised to maintain.
