Hassan Al-Tourabi

Hassan Abdallah Al-Tourabi (in Arab rear RTL حسنعبداللهالترابي) born in 1932 with Kassala is a politician and religious Sudanese. Al-Tourabi is islamist, member of the Muslim brothers.

Al-Tourabi is born in Kassala at the border with the Érythrée in 1932. His/her father is a sheik soufi. He follows studies pushed in right: control University of Khartoum (of 1951 with 1955), master of the University of London and finally thesis at the University of the Sorbonne of 1959 with 1964.

Former chief of the Sudanese Muslim brothers, it preaches a Islamic Panarabisme in militant symbiosis with all the islamist movements of the Arab world, but also not Arabic. For Tourabi, the Arab Nationalisme is “Islamic revolutionist. ”

Political course

Starting from 1984, the Muslim brothers whose Al-Tourabi is one of the chiefs bring closer to the Numeiri dictator. The state of emergency is imposed in April 1984.

1st with the April 12th 1986, legislative elections take place in Sudan. Forty parties take part in it, because of the Christian rebellion of SPLA in the south of the country, a dozen districts of the south do not take part in the elections. For the other districts, Oumma of Sadiq Al-Mahdi obtains 99 seats, the democratic Union 63 and the national Islamic front Al-Tourabi 51 seats.

The general Omar to el-Béchir arrives at the capacity by a coup d'etat in 1989 and is strongly under the influence of Al-Tourabi.

Al-Tourabi is director for Africa of the Islamic World congress.

He is elected president of the Sudanese Parliament in 1995. In December 1999, it tries évincer the general Omar to el-Béchir capacity but its attempt fails and the Parliament east dissolves.

In March 2004, to el-Béchir imprisons Al-Tourabi for coup attempt of State going back to September 2003.

The June 30th 2005, president Omar to el-Béchir, to celebrate the 16th birthday of its come to power by a coup d'etat, releases all the Sudanese political prisoners, including Al-Tourabi.

In 2006, Al-Tourabi is shown of apostasy to have written in an article that the Moslem women should have the right to marry with Christian or Juif S and qualifying the religious opinions being opposed to it of " rétrogrades". He also declared himself favorable to the organization of prayer nonseparate between men and women. He reiterated his remarks with the Université of Khartoum, qualifying his opponents traditionalists to defend of the ideas " périmées".

Islamic terrorism

The report/ratio of the National Commission on the terrorist attacks against the United States, mentions Al-Tourabi like one of the principal supports of Al-Qaeda and Oussama ben Laden in Africa.

War of Darfur

Al-Tourabi denies any implication in the activity of the islamist militia of the Mouvement for justice and the equality which prevail in the Darfur but certain reports/ratios questions its declarations.
