Harrison White

Biography

Harrison White entered to the Massachusetts Institute off Technology (MIT) at the 15 years age, and received his doctorate in Theoretical physics same establishment in 1955. He also received a doctorate in sociology of the Université of Princeton in 1960. Previously, he taught the Université Harvard, the Université of Arizona, the Université of Chicago, the Université Carnegie Mellon and with the Université of Edinburgh.

He is member of the National Academy off Sciences and of the American academy of arts and sciences.

Principal Contributions

Harrison White is one of the pioneers of the Analyze of the social networks in sociology. He in particular developed the analysis known as of the Blockmodels which makes it possible to highlight structurally equivalent positions in a network.

He is also at the origin of an original approach of the markets structured either around the only salesmen and purchasers as in the markets of exchange of the economists, but also including a temporal prospect including for the producers located in the upstream of the suppliers and the downstream of the consumers. In that he proposes a sociological model of the markets which dissociates economic Théorie traditional and can be regarded as one of the founders of the economic news Sociologie with, in particular, Mark Granovetter, one of his students.

Lastly, Harrison White also developed an original theory of the action based on a prospect in terms for social networks and social formations emergent which tries to exceed the traditional oppositions in sociology (micro/macro, static/dynamic,/structure etc arranges)
