Harold Land
Harold Land (Harold de Vance Land) is a Saxophoniste of Jazz born the February 18th 1928 with Houston (Texas) and dead the July 27th 2001 with Los Angeles.
Biography
Self-educated musician, Harold Land practices mainly the Saxophone tenor. He begins his career in buildings group. He records two 78 turns as leader with “Harold Land' S All Stars” for the Savoy label in 1949. In 1954-55, it belongs to the famous quintet of max Roach and Clifford Brown. In 1956, it settles in California, or it carries out a career of musician “free lance”. It takes part in the recording of some film musics: " the Time of the punishments " (1961), " Seven days in May " (1964), " One completes the horses " well; (1969). It takes part in the recording of enrgegistrements singers: Johnny Mathis, Bobby Darin, Brook Benton,… Its main activity remains the jazz nevertheless. He plays a time with dimensions of Jack Sheldon in the famous combo of Curtis Counce. He records albums under his name or like “Co-leader” (with Bobby Hutcherson, Blue Mitchell or Red Mitchell). He takes part in the big band of Gerald Wilson and is, in the years 1970, regular member of the orchestra which accompanies the singer Tony Bennett. At the end of the years 1970 and the beginning of the year 1980, he plays in the " Timeless AlStars" at the sides, inter alia, of Billy Higgins, Bobby Hutcherson, Cedar Walton and Curtis Fuller. Catalogued at the beginning musician Hardware bop, it knew to impregnate esthetics “West Coast” then, especially, music of John Coltrane. It carries out also a career of teacher. He is professor in the “University off California” and gives courses to UCLA. One could hear it on albums of Billie Holiday, Nancy Wilson, Thelonious Monk, Red Garland, Jimmy Smith, Blue Mitchell, Wes Montgomery, Shorty Rogers, Bill Evans,…
