Harold Budd

Type-setter of Modern music and Ambient born on May 24th 1936 with Los Angeles (California, the United States).

Emblematic figure of the scene Ambient (a term often used wrongly and through, but which has, here, perfectly its place), this Californian pianist knew to impose, during about thirty years, and with the wire of a production which intermingles work solo and various collaborations, a music minimalist and stylized, characterized by a particular treatment of the keyboards (piano or synthetizer), which creates a sensual and delicate atmosphere.

Graduate in musical composition with the the University of California of the South, in 1966, it off teaches with the California Institute Arts with the beginning of the year 1970, becoming a recognized and respected figure in parallel Californian avant-garde.

It is its meeting with Brian Eno, in the middle of the years 1970, which will make it possible Harold Budd to give to its music an international audience. Eno produced The Pavillion off Dreams (1978), the first official album of Budd, and, together, they publish two major albums of the ambient music : Ambient 2/The Plates off Mirror (1980) and The Pearl (1984).

The continuation of the production of Harold Budd is with the image of its free spirit: it changes recording company regularly or of producer, own-produced sometimes itself, contributes some times very modestly to recordings of friends or famous colleagues… It also happens that he left several albums the same year.

Its very many collaborations attest interest which Harold Budd carries to all the styles of music and testify to an opening which goes from traditional (the softness of its compositions can sometimes evoke Erik Satie or Claude Debussy) to the minimalism and the avant-garde (Zeitgeist, Hector Zazou, Akira Rabelais), while passing by ambient (Brian Eno, Eugene Bowen), the techno (Fila Brazillia), the pop one (Cocteau Twins, Andy Partridge, John Foxx) or the neo-classic (Ruben Garcia, Daniel Lentz).

In 2004, at the time of the exit of the album Avalon will sutra , it announces that it puts a term at its career, considering that it made the turn of what it had to express.
