Harold Alexander

Sir Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander (1891-1969) is a marshal of the British Armée, former minister and former general governor of Canada.

Studies with Harrow School and the Military academy of Sandhurst. It is named second lieutenant of the Irish Guards on September 23rd, 1911. Captain in 1915, ordering in 1917, it L fights on the Western face during the First World War. Wounded twice, quoted the January 1st, 1916, on January 4th, 1917 and on December 27th, 1918. In 1916, it receives the Military Cross ( MC ), on January 1st, the Distinguished Service Order ( DSO ) on October 20th and the cross of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. In 1919-20, it orders a brigade of the Latvian army during the civil war against the Bolsheviks; city (7/8/19, 2/3/20). Named lieutenant-colonel in May 1922, it follows the school of War of Camberley (1926-27) then the imperial College of Defense (1930). Colonel, it is useful in India (1934-38); city (7/2 and 5/8/36) and named Companion of Star of India ( CSI ) the 2/7/36. He becomes major general in October 1937, he orders the 1st Division of the task force in France; city the 12/20/40. Lieutenant-general of army on July 1st, 1940, it is charged to prevent a German unloading on the southern part of England.

General on January 17th, 1942, it joined Burma and organizes in March the retirement of the British troops towards India; city the 10/28/42 and named Large Knight' Cross about the Bath ( GCB ) on November 11th, 1942. It is then named Commander-in-chief of the allied troops in North Africa (1942-43) and, as from February 1943, Ordering 15th Group of armies (8th British army and 1st American army) during the countryside of Italy (1943-44). It is then named marshal on June 4th, 1944 and the same year, in November, supreme Commander of the allied forces in the Mediterranean. April 29th, 1945, it receives the rendering of the German army on the Italian face.

Named Large Knight Cross about Saint-Michel and Saint-George ( GCMG ) on January 20th, 1946, it is made Vicomte Alexander of Tunis on March 1st of this year. It becomes General governor of Canada of April 1946 in February 1952. It is named Chevalier about the Jumper ( KG ) on December 3rd, 1946 then made Count Alexander of Tunis and Baron Rideau of Ottawa on March 14th, 1952. He is Minister for the defense of the cabinet of Winston Churchill of March 1952 in October 1954. Decorated about the Merit ( OM ) on April 23rd, 1960, he becomes Connétable of the Tower of London of August 1960 in July 1965.
