Harlem Desire

Harlem Desire born the November 25th 1959 with Paris 13th child of a father inhabitant of Martinique and an Alsatian mother. European deputy of the Socialist party since 1999.

Political course

It made its studies at the University of Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne where it obtained a license of philosophy in 1983. It engages then in the trade union studied UNEF-ID, of which he will be member of the national office, but especially S.O.S Racism, of which he becomes the very media spokesperson, until in 1992.

Then it engages in the policy, with the Socialist party. Tried one moment by Generation ecology, it joined definitively the current of the Gauche Socialist and enters to the national council of the PS in 1994, then at the national office in 1997 and becomes finally national leader for Europe in 2003, when it follows Julien Dray which joined the majority of the party. In 2005, it militates for “yes” with the referendum on the project of European constitutional treaty.

Before to be elected, it stimulating radio operator, was paid in, a manager publisher of a monthly magazine and collaborator of a European network of housing of the young people.

In parallel, he was member of the Economic and Social Council, of 1989 with 1994 then of 1997 with 1999. He is member of the national council of the PS since 1994 and the national office since 1997.

He was candidate with the partial legislative election with Aulnay-sous-Bois in 1997, but it is in 1999 that he obtains its first mandate like European deputy. In 2001, it is elected city council man of opposition to Aulnay-sous-Bois. In 2004, it leads the list of the PS for the area Île-de-France for the European elections 2004; he is re-elected and promoted vice-president of the parliamentary group of the Socialist party European.

During its European mandate of Appointed, it is invested on the questions of Mondialisation. It will go each year to the Worldwide social forum and will be at the origin as a president of the joint committee “tax on the Capital” of a vote, negative, on the Taxe Tobin in the European Parliament.

Favorable to the " oui" at the time of internal referendum to the national PS then of May 29th, 2005, Harlem Désir criticizes the partisans of the " violently; non" and the association Attac, of which without being member, it was one of the parliamentary relays. He does not break therefore the bonds with the movement altermondialist, but only with his component neocommuniste/souverainist which according to him the direction of Attac represents.

Judgments

The December 17th 1998, Harlem Désir is condemned to 18 months of Prison with deferment and 30 000 frankly S of fine for concealment of Abuse of corporate asset. Indeed, of November 1986 at October 1987, whereas he was president of S.O.S Racism, Harlem Désir was also paid by regional Association for the training and the education of the migrants, based with Lille. Engaged as “a permanent trainer”, it perceived gross a fictitious wages monthly of 10 500 Francs. For the Prosecutor, “these wages did not correspond to any real activity” .
