François Hard , born with Dijon the June 4th 1784 and dead the November 3rd 1855 with Paris, is a French sculptor.

Biography

In 1809, it settles in Paris and becomes the pupil of Pierre Cartellier, obtaining the Prix of Rome in 1812. In 1815, it leaves to settle with Brussels where it is put at the service of the architect Van der Straeten and carries out nine Bas-relief S for the palate of Tervueren. It marries Sophie Fremiet there, then goes back to Paris. Sophie Fremiet was the girl of Louis Fremiet, French voluntary exiled Bonapartist. Louis Fremiet was the brother of the sculptor Emmanuel Fremiet. After 1827, it produces a statue of the Virgin for the church Saint-Gervais and a statue of Mercure, exposed today to the Louvre. In 1833, it obtains the Légion of honor and an ordering of high relief for the Triumphal arch of the Star: it is about the Départ of the volunteers of 1792 , commonly called the Marseillaise , who is her most famous work.

A museum is devoted to him in its birthplace, installed in the transept of the old church Saint-Etienne, 8, rue Vaillant, 21000 Dijon. It is advisable to telephone before to visit it: 03 80 74 52 20. It contiend primarily of the mouldings.

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux was one of its pupils.
