Harcy

Harcy is a common French, located in the department of the the Ardennes and the area Champagne-Ardenne.

Geography

Located at the south-west of the solid mass of the Ardenne (not to be confused with the Ardennes: the department), in extreme cases geological between the primary formations (Cambrien in north) and the secondary grounds (marnes and marly limestones of the Lias in the south), Harcy still forms part of Ardenne but plunges already towards this peripheral depression, this corridor where run the Chiers, the Meuse and more particularly the Sormonne and which leads to the square (sedimentary outcrops of the Paris basin) which constitutes the remainder of the department.

The origin of the name

According to Jean-Baptiste Lépine: (Monograph of old the marquisat of Montcornet in the Ardennes and of the communes of Renwez)

" Arsis, Arcis, Arcies, Arcy, Arcys, Warcy, Harcys, Harcy… all denominations which would derive or from Latin arcis, arccio; or of the rough Greek, arx, arce; or of Celtic the waarcy, whose significance is with little thing close the same one: bridge, ford, passage, placed in-on this side hauteur."

According to Dom Albert Christmas: (historical Note on the canton of Renwez)

Disputing the etymological explanation of J-B Lépine which it describes as " too much fantaisiste" , A. Noël prefers this more historical interpretation to him: " To the 11th century, the ground was given by the lords of Rumigny to the monks of Nicaise Saint of Rheims, which made it clear partly by their churls of the ground of the Pals. From there, the name of the humble village, villa of terris arsis, village of the burned grounds, and, by ellipse, Arsis, from where the vulgar name Harcys, Harcy. (...) This name then appears for the first time in the bubble of Alexandre III, of the February 8th 1169. (...) The sovereign-Pontiff, confirming the equipment of the priory of Ham, recognizes that Pierre de Montcornet included/understood the whole dîme of Harcy there, by where one knows that the parish existed consequently; moreover, all our older Pouillés maintained this title at the village. Here the extract of that of 1306: paragraph IV. Decanatus de Alneto. Servant 40 lib. parisis Parrochia de Harcis, fundata in hon. S. $petri, apostoli. Patronus, Abba S. Nicasii Remensis."

History

History of the territory of Harcy

In the beginning, all the territory belonged to the forest of Thiérache which draws its name from one of the Mérovingiens to which it was given in division. Dismemberment of the immense forest of the Ardennes which, at the time of César, occupied all the north of the Gaulle.

At the time Roman thus, among the nine pagi or countries which divided the " area ardennaise" , that to which was to belong the soil of Harcy was without any doubt the pagis Teorascensis it Thiérache-, which makes integral part of Aisne now, but of which, formerly, raised the abbey of Seven-Fountains (Blanchefosse), Rocroi, Renwez, Montcornet (indifferently called, formerly, Montcornet in Ardenne or Rethélois), Signy the Small one; then, for half, the cantons of Wall and Rumigny.

According to A. Noël, the site of the parish of Harcy would be indicated in the famous bubble-sign granted the April 10th 1113 Joranne, abbot of Saint-Nicaise, by Pascal II, in the following terms: (...) quercetum sub goes up and memus of arsuris. The pope enumerates the possessions of the abbey, in our regions of Chimay, and it quotes a Chênaie on a coast, with the wood of the grounds to be cleared. It is at that time that the village was built by the monks of Saint-Nicaise, and it was built since long years in 1169, date on which it was refers in the origin of the name of Harcy.

Murtin, close village, appears to be built a little later and remained attached to Harcy like first aid until in 1687.

Rimogne is also indicated on a manuscript of the year 1328, seen by Dom Marlot in 1666, like second help of the parish-mother of Harcy.

History of the châtellenie of Harcy

Harcy was formerly a ground seigneuriale, modest a châtellenie annexed to the marquisat of Montcornet as of 1561.
