Harar

Classified with the World heritage of humanity since 2006, the town of Harar Jugol (this last word indicating the walls) is located at the East of Ethiopia. She is regarded as the fourth holiest city of Islam. Its history is rich. Indeed, before being conquered by Egypt, it was in XVIe century the capital of the kingdom of Harari (1520-1568) and an important Islamic cultural hearth and at the XVIIe century the center of an independent emirate.

The city reflects this rich person passed while proposing a concentrate of the architecture of various times:

  • Of Xe century, remains three mosques out of the 82 which account the city.
  • the walls were built between XIIIe and XVIe century.
  • the houses are also traditional, but some of them are due to Indian immigrants made here at the XIXe century.
It is for these reasons and its typical urban plan that the city was classified by UNESCO in 2006.

According to the census of 1994, the city counts 76.378 inhabitants.
