Happy martyrs

The Bienheureux martyrs of September indicate of the monks victims of the Massacres of September, during the French revolution, and béatifiés by the Pape Pie XI the October 17th 1926.

Summary

After the fall of the Monarchy the August 10th 1792, the fever goes up to Paris. Many suspects are stopped: secular Laïcs, priests, Religieux, often famous refractories, even if it is not the case of all. Approximately 350 ecclesiastics are thus imprisoned, of which more half foreigners with the capital. Between the 2 and the September 5th, armed bands men and women invade the Parisian prisons to deliver to the collective execution prisoners with the convent of the Carmes, with the abbey of Saint-Germain, the seminar Saint-Firmin, the prisons of the Force, street Saint-Anthony.

The convent of the Carmelite friars, with his very vast enclosure, is the first and more symbolic system theater of slaughters. With the testimony of the Saurin abbot, Jesuit survivor, contrast is seizing between the serenity which reigns with-inside, among the captive ecclesiastics, grouped around three bishops, and, with the outside, the howl of crowd, the cannonades, the drum rolls, and finally, the 2, around four hours of the evening, the alarm bell of Saint-Sulpice which gives the signal to the rioters. The slaughter which started in the garden completes, after a show of judgment, with the foot of the small staircase making communicate the vault, where the prisoners initially ebbed and gave mutually each other the discharge, and the garden. “I did not intend to complain any of those which I saw massacred”, will write the abbot of Pannonia, wounded and survivor of the tragedy of the Carmelite friars.

Among the 3.000 victims of September 1792, 191 people died for their faith were béatifiées by Pie XI the October 17th 1926. 86 priests were members of the Parisian Clergé. The four Laic and of many béatifiés monks also belonged to the Église of Paris.

Commemoration

There does not exist official commemoration. The liturgical calendar mentions the September 2nd like the day of commemoration of the Happy martyrs. This mention is not reproduced on the ordinary diaries.
