Happy Arabia

The happy Arabia indicated for the Greek and Romains Arabia of the South (current Yemen), relatively wet thanks to its mountains and with an important system of irrigation, centers of the rich person civilization of the Sabéens.

Happy Arabia ( Arabia Felix ) was opposed by its name to the others " Arabies" known by the Romans. It was first of all about the pétrée Arabia, old kingdom of Nabatéens become Roman province in 106, then with the deserts traversed by the Arabs, immense arid territories dedicated to the nomadism which extended until in Mésopotamie and can correspond to the deserted Arabia of Ptolémée. This area was the territory of the Arab called by the Greeks skenitai (carrying tents), even if they had big cities like Hatra, in the east of the Syria where a king of the Arabs is known. When the armies of the emperors gained a victory in this area, the emperor took the title of Arabicus , victorious of the Arabs, as Septime Sévère did it.

Happy Arabia represented, for the Romans, generally a semi-fabulous ground, where the Phoenix lived and from which came the Encens necessary to the religious acts, as well as other spices. It could also constitute a stage on the sea routes towards the India and Far East. In the middle of the 2nd century a Roman military presence is attested on the islands Farasan, not far from the coasts of Roman Arabia.
