Happiness is an American film carried out by Todd Solondz in 1998.

Synopsis

Joy Jordan is thirty year frustrated, it still has just broken with his/her last small-friend and following the suicide of this one, she decides to resign of her work. Joy is a little the black sheep of its family.

Contrary, his/her Trish sister has it a well arranged life, a beautiful house, a husband psychiatrist and children full with life. In the same way, their other Helen sister leads a life of novelist to success and multiplies the lovers. Their parents them, live in a beautiful residence for pensioners.

However, when one looks at there more closely, Joy does not have great a deal to envy all its family:
Le husband of Trish proves to be a dangerous paedophile, attracted by the buddies of their 11 year old son (who is obsessed to him by ejaculation that it does not manage A). Helen it, wants to be made violate by a telephone pervert in order to be able to make a book of it. As for the reprocessed parents, the mother is doped with the drugs and she wants to divorce…

Topic and controversy

In this film, Todd Solondz makes an effort as much as it can scratch the middle-class right-thinking person of the New Jersey. By the absurdity, he seeks to show that the people with the most perfect outside can prove to be monsters when one scrapes a little varnish.

The character who makes counterweight in this logic is that of Joy. Categorized like " ratée" by the company which surrounds it, frustrated by its conquests and its jobs, it proves to have courage and tenacity.

Happiness caused a great controversy in particular with regard to the character of the psychiatrist paedophile. This one is presented like a father and a loving husband, and its profession is completely sizeable. But it can to fight against its impulses perverse, so much so that, when his/her son asks to him whether he could have violated it, he answers him that he would have rather masturbated by looking at it.

This comedy black and disturbing is probably the film of Solondz more successful because the provocation, humor and the emotion are still proportioned there, which east cannot be not the case of other films of the realizer.
