Hans Bernoulli

Biography

Hans Bernoulli is the son of the mathematician Theodor Bernoulli and the brother of the Orthophoniste Elisabeth Bernoulli. After having failed in its secondary studies the gymnasium of Basle, and having stopped a training of employee of trade, it starts, in 1894, a Apprentissage of draftsman out of building in the cabinet of the architects Alfred Romang and Wilhelm Bernoulli. After obtaining its certificate, it continues its studies in 1897 and 1898 with the Technische Hochschule of Munich (where it follows in particular the courses of Friedrich von Thiersch) then to the Technische Universität of Karlsruhe in 1900 and until 1902 with Darmstadt and Berlin.

In 1902, it is established in Berlin, where it joins Louis Rinkel. He travels much for his business, in particular in Austria, Italy and with the Denmark. In 1904, it marries Anna Ziegler, girl of Pasteur Heinrich Ziegler.

In 1912, it turns over in its birthplace where he becomes architect responsible and member for the management committee of the Basler Baugesellschaft . He also teaches at the polytechnic school of Zurich where he is named professor in 1919

In 1938, it is in the middle of a scandal linked to the publication of some of its satirical poems on the policy and financial world, which costs him its post of teacher. He is elected with the Parlement in 1947 and there defends an industrial relations policy, preaching the installation of the concepts of Freiwirtschaftsbund stated by Silvio Gesell. He is also at the origin of the federal programme of construction of HLM in Switzerland.

He dies at his place, at the 83 years age.

Works

The architectural work of Bernoulli is strongly based on the concept of “Juste-evolution” of planning of the cities, and the ideas of the Cité-jardin supported by Ebenezer Howard and Raymond Unwin. Among his many achievements, one can quote:
