Hanif Kureishi is a writer and Dramaturge British, born the December 5th 1954 with London (the United Kingdom).

Biography

Wire of a English E and a Pakistan board, Kureishi studied the Philosophie with the Université of London. Its books treat primarily Immigration, Racisme and Sexualité. It is one of the most known representatives of the new “school” of British writers of foreign origin.

One of its most known works is My Beautiful Laundrette , scenario of a film whose main character is a boy of anglo-Pakistani origin, homosexual, which grows in London in the years 1980. The film was carried out by Stephen Frears and it gained the New York Film Critics Best Screenplay Award and was named with the Oscar for the price of the best scenario. Kureishi also wrote for Stephen Frears the scenario of Sammy and Rosie Get Laid .

The book of Kureishi the Buddha of suburbs ( The Buddha off Suburbia , 1990) received the Whitbread Award better first novel and was adapted in televised series (with a music of David Bowie).

The novel Intimité ( Intimacy , 1998) caused a debate, because the history evokes a man who, feeling physically and émotionnellement rejected by his wife, with whom it has two children, leaves it. The debate did not relate on the book, but to the fact that the author himself had just left his wife and his two sons. In 2000-2001 the novel was freely adapted to the cinema by Patrice Chéreau. The film gained two Bears with the Festival of Berlin, a Bear of Gold of best film and a Money Bear of the best actress for Kerry Fox.

The part of Kureishi The Mother , also adapted to the cinema by Roger Michel, watch a transgénérationnelle relation where the usual roles were reversed: 70 years an English lady allures the thirty year boyfriend of its daughter.

In Against its heart ( My Ear At His Heart ), an autobiographical account, Kureishi evoke his/her father, who had also tested himself with the writing, and the genesis of his own inspiration.

Quotations

  • “the desire is menacing, it does not conform to our ideals, and for this reason we need so much them. The desire makes fun of all the human efforts and a direction gives them. The desire is the original anarchist, the first secret agent - not astonishing that people want the éradiquer. And at the exact moment when we think of firmly holding the support with the desire, it drops to us or it fills us with a new hope. The desire makes me laugh because he makes fun of us all, as far as we are. But to as much let itself roll in the flour by him that to become fascistic. ” ( Intimacy )
