Synopsis

A ex- Detective deprived, Jeff Markham, is found in the city where it hides under a false name by a henchman of the gangster and former employer of Jeff, Whit Sterling, recalling him that it has a debt towards this one dating from the time when it was to bring back the mistress of the gangster, Kathie Moffett, which was flees with a nest egg after him to have drawn above. Jeff had then not honoured its contract, although it had found Kathie. He had indeed believed this one when she said herself innocent about the flight, then had fallen in love from there. But when it kills another henchman of Whit, Jeff knows that he was made berner and goes terrer in small a ville.
It curiously finds Kathie in the house of Whit, which now charges it with taking again the accounts books that its accountant carried with him in his escape. But it is a trap: the man is killed and Jeff is shown murder.
