Handle-with-Griffon

The village of It Handle-with-Griffon the is located on the littoral of the point of the gaspesy, not far in north from Gaspé and is bordered by the village of River-with-Fox to the west and Cape-of-Rose trees in the east.

History

The first traces of life would go back to 9000 years before today. Three recently dated campings make it possible to prove the Amerindian presence paleohistoric in the valley of Handle-with-Griffon.

This village was of great importance in the fishing industry to the XIXe sciècle. John LeBoutillier, businessman Jersey, made there build warehouses for salt, the flour and the salted cod in 1840. He was also made build a Manoir to supervise his marketing activities in the areas. Frames in 1860, this manor makes party of the Canadian inheritance now.

Toponymy

Still to date, the origin of the name of this village remains a mystery. Here the three most plausible explanations:

  1. the Griffon term would come from the gray color of the bottom of the handle (gray-bottom)
  2. the first fishermen of the handle paid to have seen birds on the cliffs which resembled curiously scratch
  3. Finalement, Bellin which writes in 1744 " Griffon" name of the ship ordered by Mathieu Forsyth, going down from the first lord of Gaspésie which visited the coast of Gaspé in 1732. The boat stopped regularly in bay at the XVIIIe century and could have given its name to the village.
