Handicap International

Handicap International is a Governmental organization created in 1982 by two French doctors first of all to come to assistance of the people Réfugié are in camps with the Kampuchea and in Thailand. Its sphere of activity extends now to all planet. Initially established in France, it thereafter opened sections in seven other countries: in Belgium, Swiss, with the Luxembourg, the the United Kingdom, in Germany, with the Canada and the the United States. It is an independent and non-profit-making association, committed in favor of the people Handicap ées to which it gives a support for four levels: readjustment, the reintegration, prevention and more recently mine clearance.

Readjustment

It is firstly a question of manufacturing " appareils" who help the people handicapped with (Re) finding a greater autonomy of movement. One (D) training of autonomy (epic of the daily life) also formed part of the project of readjustment of Handicap International.

Insertion

This field aims before very setting up initiatives allowing the people in situation of handicap who cannot carry on their community activity any more to find a generating activity of income. Another objective is to avoid the rejection of the person by her community and to support its social integration. Work is done mainly within the community: demystification of the handicap, Community projects where the handicapped person itself is integrated into the social group of which it forms part. The sports activities and of leisures can for this purpose play a big role.

Prevention

Handicap International takes various actions in order to prevent the appearance of handicaps, and that by publicity campaigns. First of all, H.I organizes sessions of information addressing itself to the populations as well as sessions of formation for medical staff in order to prevent that diseases like the Lèpre and the Poliomyélite do not lead to handicaps for lack of precautions. Moreover, H.I has carried out for a few years an preventive action of the road accidents, one of the leading causes of handicap in the world. That passes by educational programs in schools or a collaboration with the local authorities in order to improve the fields of the infrastructure and the legislation.

Mine clearance

Since 1996, H.I developed a new field of intervention: projects related on the mines and the bombs (in particular the bombs at submunitions). These projects aim before very decreasing the impact of the presence of the anti-personnel mines on the populations living in the middle of undermined zones. A large pallet of activities is organized within this framework:

programme of education to the prevention of the accidents by mines
mine clearance and débombage
collection of information on the accidents
investigation into the Socio-economic impact of the presence of the mines
studies on various subjects following the evolution of this sector

Other activities

Handicap International carries out more than 60 projects in 60 countries, in particular in countries in acute or chronic crisis situation. The organization is Co-prize winner of the Nobel Prize of peace 1997 as a member of the coordination committee of the international Campagne for the prohibition of the anti-personnel mines, for its determining action in the fight against the mines.

This ONG is active on many faces. More than 3.000 collaborators support the organization on all planet.

To promote its action near the public and to allow him to call upon the gift in confidence, the French section of the organization, as an association, adheres to the Comité of the Charter.
