Handbook III of Trébizonde
Manuel III Comnène was emperor of Trébizonde of 1390 with 1417 March 5th 1417-->. He succeeded his father, Alexis III. On arrival of the conqueror Tamerlan in the area, Manuel was combined with him and became its vassal; Tamerlan inflicted a severe defeat with the Othoman Turks with the Bataille of Ankara in 1402, which profited in Trébizonde, because the expansion of the Othomans threatened it.
The Encyclopædia Britannica of 1911 known as of Handbook: “ Manuel III reigned of 1390 to 1417 but its only interest is its bond with Tamerlan, of which it became the vassal one without any resistance ”.
The Ambassadeur Ruy Gonzáles de Clavijo was accepted by Manuel at the time of its voyage through Trébizonde in April 1404 and wrote what follows:

“the emperor and his son adorn imperial dresses. They related to their head of large surmounted hats of cords of Or, on which feathers of cranes were; the hats were dependant with skins of Martre S … This emperor pays a tribute in Timur Beg, and the other Turks, who are neighbors. He is married with a close relationship of the emperor of Constantinople, and his/her son is married with the girl of a knight of Constantinople, and two grand-daughters. ”
Handbook, “like his/her father, is interested of close at the religious buildings. The year of its succession, it presented a decorated cross supposed to contain a Relique crowned (stavrotek), a part the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucifié with the Monastère of Sumela. ”
