Hand (paper mill)

In printing works, the word hand has two current significances:

  • it is a measuring unit equal to 25 sheets of paper (one counts the sheets five by five with the five fingers of the Main…)
  • it is the " raideur" paper, measured by the relationship between the thickness of the sheet and its grammage. For example, a sheet of which the thickness is of 300 Micromètre S and who weighs 200 g/m has a " main" from 1,5. It is an important parameter for the printer which - by an intelligent choice of different papers of hands - can obtain similar thicknesses for works which have a number different of pages.
