Hammerfest
Hammerfest is a Kommune north of the Norway, located in the county of Finnmark. One says of it that it is the most septentrional city of the world (70° 39 ' 48'' NR).
The city is located on the island of Kvaløya, while the kommune includes/understands partially the islands of Kvaløya, Sørøya and Seiland.
History
Many tombs dating from the age of the stone were found in this area. Hammerfest was already an important establishment of fishermen and hunters well before the official recognition of its statute of municipality, in 1789.
The city knew a major fire in 1890. It in addition constitutes one of the centers of the Lappish culture .
During the Second world war, the German troops forced the inhabitants to evacuate Hammerfest, before reducing the city in ashes at the time of their retirement.
Economy
The city counts today 9.500 inhabitants whose majority work in the factories of transformation of the Poisson, in particular on behalf of the company Findus. It also accommodates industries in connection with the maritime activity and constitutes one of the stopovers of the Hurtigruten.
The city turns now to the energy prospection (oil and gas), and a terminal is in the course of construction in the north of the city, in Melkøy, in order to treat gas conveyed by tankers since the wells of exploitation.
Local curiosities
- If the continental Norway does not count any polar bear, the city remains the seat of the royal Société of the polar bear ( Isbjørnklubbe ). Hammerfest was indeed the wearing of departure of the forwarding of hunting towards the archipelago of Svalbard. A small museum, in the buildings of the company, is devoted to the history of the Chasse in medium Arctique.

- the Norwegian glacier most septentrional is accessible from the city, and constitutes a tourist attraction very appraisal. An excursion in boat until the Northern Cape is organized the every day.
