Hamdallaye
Hamdallaye is a city of the Mali, in the area of Mopti located at 37 km of Mopti.
Hamdallaye (which means “praise with God”) was founded in 1818 by Sékou Amadou to become the capital of the Empire peul of Macina. City strengthened with a rampart of 5600 meters, it comprised 60 districts sheltering a population estimated at 300.000 inhabitants. In addition to its palate, Sékou Amadou had made there build a large mosque. The city counted nearly 750 Koranic schools. March 16th 1862, El Hadj Oumar Tall conquers Hamdallaye. It shaves the city and made there build a fortress. In 1864, a fire devastates the city at the time of a battle. El Hadj Oumar Tall gives up the city.
The historical city, which includes/understands the vestiges of the old capital is the subject of a classification in the national cultural heritage.
