Halmahera

Halmahera , also called Gilolo or Jilolo is an island of Indonesia in the archipelago of the Moluques. It is largest of the Moluques with a surface of 17.754 km ². It is located on the equator, and counts approximately 180.000 inhabitants.

The island belongs to the province of the Moluques of North.

Population

The spoken languages with Halmahera belong to 2 definitely distinct groups:

those of north form the group known as " north-halmahérien" , which belongs to the family known as of the Western Papou and also includes the languages of Ternate and Tidore.
those of the south belong to the group known as " exchange-Eastern " Austronesian branch of the Languages austronésiennes.

Certain authors thus think that, Halmahera, the populations would have left which were going to conquer all the Pacifique: the Océanien S, inventors of civilization Lapita and precursors of the people which are called nowadays, since Jules Dumont d' Urville, Micronesia NS, Mélanésie NS and Polynésie NS.
