Halmahera

Halmahera , also called Gilolo or Jilolo is an island of Indonesia in the archipelago of the Moluques. It is largest of the Moluques with a surface of 17.754 km ². It is located on the equator, and counts approximately 180.000 inhabitants.

The island belongs to the province of the Moluques of North.

ic Volcano and glaze of Forest S, its inhabitants produce on the coast of the Riz, of the Cacao, the Café, the Canne to sugar, the Coprah and the spices (nails of Girofle), exported by the ports of Gilolo and Ternate. Layers of Nickel, Copper, Gold and coal are exploited.

Population

The spoken languages with Halmahera belong to 2 definitely distinct groups:
  • those of north form the group known as " north-halmahérien" , which belongs to the family known as of the Western Papou and also includes the languages of Ternate and Tidore.
  • those of the south belong to the group known as " exchange-Eastern " Austronesian branch of the Languages austronésiennes.

Certain authors thus think that, Halmahera, the populations would have left which were going to conquer all the Pacifique: the Océanien S, inventors of civilization Lapita and precursors of the people which are called nowadays, since Jules Dumont d' Urville, Micronesia NS, Mélanésie NS and Polynésie NS.
