Halluin

Halluin (in Dutch: Halewijn ) is a common French, located in the department of the Northern (59) and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Its inhabitants is Halluinois.

Geography

Situation

Halluin is located in the septentrional part of the Arrondissement of Lille near the Lys, on the Belgian border free . It is bordering with the common French on Bousbecque, Roncq and Neuville-in-Ferrain and with the common Belgian of Wervicq, Menin and with old the common Belgian of Rekkem in Flanders Occidentale.
Halluin is located at 9 km of Tourcoing, to 10 km of Mouscron, to 13 km of Courtrai, to 18 km of Lille, to 19 km of Roulers, to 22 km of Ypres and to 23 km of Armentières.

Demography

In 1469, Halluin was a village comprising surroundings 300 inhabitants. The fast increase during second half of the 19th century is due to the massive immigration of Flemish workmen in the search of a work. During twenty-five years, the city counted more than 75% from abroad.

Origins

The origin of the name is not well established. According to the abbot Alphonse-Marie Coulon, the origin will come from the word " halu" and that of " in" , the first being the name of a Saxon or frank chief and the second being a particle used in Flanders meaning dwelling or demeure.
Of another etymologists thinks that the name come from " hassou halle" who means " entrepôt" and of " win" who wants to say " vin".
Its name changed several times of orthography while passing by " haluwin" , " halewin" , " halowin" , " haluing" , " halwin" , " haluyn" then " halluin".

The Middle Ages

The name of Halluin, in its early form " Hallewyn" appears for the first time in the deed of gift made by Baudouin V, said of Lille, Count de Flandre, with the church and chapter of Saint-Pierre of Lille in September 1066.

16th century

At the beginning of the 16th century, the lords of Halluin are the same ones as those of Comines: houses of Croy, Line-Croy, Hénin-Liétard and, finally, dukes of Orleans. Halluin was also Spanish, at the 16th century, when the Flanders S passed to the hands Habsbourgs. The city must are nickname of Halluin the Red with the important trade unionism which made it possible to the Communists to take the town hall during the Entre-deux-guerres. This period was remarkably studied by Michel Hastings in his thesis of État.

Traditionally, the principal activity was the textile which, in 1948, employed 7500 people of which about half of frontier. The city counted up to twenty textile companies.

The other principal activities are the manufacture of pieces of furniture (of chairs, in particular) and agriculture.

Architectural heritage

  • the supposed manor is a farm going back to 1473. It is located in the street Arthur-Dennetière and on the road of Linselles. It was contiguous to the castle of Molinel which was destroyed by a fire at the time of the engagements with the Austrians the September 13rd 1793. The site of the castle is covered today with trees and plants.

The town of Halluin is very sportive.
the treads Halluinoises (32e edition in 2007) are known on the regional plans, nationals and international.

There are nineteen associations and sporting clubs with Halluin.
