Hallstein doctrines

The doctrines Hallstein is the application, starting from 1955, by the foreign policy of the the Federal Republic of Germany of the rupture of its diplomatic relations with any state recognizing its rival, the German Democratic republic.

Context

According to the doctrines, which bear the name of the West German Secretary of State Walter Hallstein, FRG proclaims itself like only representing legal of Germany. Thus, Bonn is restricted to indicate GDR like the " Soviet zone of occupation". In addition, Moscow prevents the countries of the Warsaw Pact from joining again diplomatic relations with FRG.

As, FRG announces as it will break its relations with the states which recognize GDR.

Application

The doctrines, rather unpopular even at its allies, are applied for the first time in 1957. FRG breaks its relations with the Yugoslavia which had recognized GDR.

The doctrines will be also applied with Cuba in 1963. But it quickly loses its relevance in a context of international relaxation, then will be finally abandoned at the end of the years 1960 with the profit of the policy of opening towards the East, known as Ostpolitik .
