Half-brigade

France

The half-brigade is a military Unité created in France in 1794 to replace the Régiment. The payment of 1794 replaced the regiments with two Bataillon S by supposed “half-brigades of battle” with three Bataillon S to ensure the quality of the army since one there practiced the amalgam between two battalions of volunteers and one of professional soldiers. There were in the beginning 198 half-brigades but in front of the cast iron of manpower, one decided in 1796 to amalgamate the half-brigades of battle by two in new “half-brigades of line”, become Régiment S in 1803. During the more recent periods, half-brigades were made up to meet specific needs; they often consist of units with two battalions. One finds some in particular in the Foreign legion.
