Haitian gourd

The gourd is the national currency of Haiti. Its code ISO 4217 is HTG . It is divided into 100 centimes .

The first use of the gourd goes back to 1813. It replaced the delivers during 1 gourd = 8 book 5 Sou S. In 1870 and 1872, the gourd was revalued, the first time from 10 to 1, and the second time from 300 to 1. At the time, there were only tickets, the word piastre was sometimes used, in particular on a ticket of 1875. In 1881, the course was indexed on that of the franc at the rate of 5 francs = 1 gourd.

Convertibility with the franc was suspended in 1912 and the gourd was indexed on the dollar states-unien at the rate of 5 gourds for a dollar. This indexing was abandoned in 1989 and the course is now floating. But the term Haitian dollar for 5 gourds is still used. Same manner, the word penny is used for 5 centimes.
