Hainan (海南 Hǎinán , “in the south of the sea”) or Hainan CAD (海南島/海南岛 Hǎinán Dǎo , “island of the south of the sea”) is an island in the south of the China. It forms a the province, smallest of the country, to which the Chinese government attaches small Pacific Islands on which he asserts sovereignty without exerting it in fact. Hainan is a special economic Zone, an area profiting from legal advantages to attract the overseas investments.

Cultures

It is in this province that one produces Noix of arec (or nut of bétel ), consumed in all China in the form of bétel to be chewed. The culture of the Palmier to bétel began there during the dynasties Tang (618 - 907) and Song (960 - 1279), during which the nut was regarded as an invaluable gift.

Languages

Several Chinese languages are spoken in Hainan, of which the Hainanais which are variety of Min nan, and the Danzhouhua (dialect not classified).

Beside Chinese, one speaks in Hainan the following languages:

  • Darang Deng (language sino-Tibetan)
  • Hlai (language tai-kadai)
  • Jiamao (language tai-kadai)
  • Tsat (language Austronésien).

Two city-prefectures are under the jurisdiction of the province :
  • the town of Haikou - 海口市 Hǎikǒu Shì   ;
  • the town of Sanya - 三亚市 Sānyà Shì .

The province also directly manages sixteen subdivisions - six city-counties, four counties and six autonomous counties  :
