Haguenau

Haguenau ( German Hagenau in ) is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace. It is the seat of the one of the Sous-préfecture S of the department.

Its inhabitants is called the Haguenoviens .

Geography

Haguenau ( Hagenau in German) is located at approximately 35 km in the north of Strasbourg. It is the fourth more populated city of Alsace, and more populated second of the Low-Rhine.

This commune with the characteristic to have a very vast territory (vastest of Alsace). This territory in particular includes vastest forest of the area, which marks a real caesura within the plain of Alsace. So the Alsatian part located at north of this forest is named “in addition to-Forest” by the Alsatian ones. Haguenau is located at the south of this forest.

A network of bus (RITMO) was born in August 2006.

History

City based by Frederic de Hohenstaufen known as One-eyed the , father of Frederic Barberousse, on the island of the Moder. Frederic Barberousse, the founder of the Holy Germanic Roman Empire, wrote the charter of Haguenau, which grants the city certain a number of privilièges, and made city his place of residence favorite (so much so that there exist still some buildings today bearing his name). Free city of Empire starting from 1262, Haguenau integrates the Décapole into its creation in 1357 and becomes the chief town about it. It loses its statute of free city in 1648, at the time of its annexation by the France following the Traités of Westphalia. In 1677, the city, including the famous imperial castle, was destroyed by the troops of Monclar, general of Louis XIV. In 1789, it counts approximately 4500 inhabitants.

November 1918: Under the Alsatian Soviet republic, Haguenau is organized in Soviet.

Beginning 1945 the city suffered much at the time of the German offensive of the Opération Nordwind. Between March and January, Haguenau is directly located on the frontline and it undergoes ceaseless bombardments of German artillery whereas 7000 civilians always terrent themselves in the cellars.

Economy

More than 2.890 companies and actors are installed on the territory of the commune, in particular on its industrial parks, offering more than 19.000 employment including 40% in industry. The industrial park of Haguenau is shared with another very rich city, Schweighouse-on-Moder.

About 1240, Albert hears the call of the Lord: " Come and am me! ". He then leaves the castle to carry out a life of hermit at the edge of the Rothbach in the holy forest of Haguenau. A community of Guillelmites, then of Jésuite S accommodate the pilgrims who flow, of which Marie Leczinska, woman of Louis XV.

the reception of the sanctuary, spiritual animation and hotel trade for the pilgrims are ensured today by the Bénédictines of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre.
