Hadewij of Antwerp

Hadewij of Antwerp (or Hadewijch ) was a writer, poet and mystic of the XIIIe century.

Biography

The rebuilding of the biography is particularly difficult for this Béguine Flemish. Some indicate 1220 - 1260 like probable dates; she lives in any case at the beginning of XIIIe century. She is probably of nobility because she seems well to know Latin, which was usually not the case in the girls of the middle-class or the minor nobility. Our research is made all the more difficult as Hadewijch seems to hide its writing. We do not know any confessor to him who would have taken it under his protection and would have transmitted some information to us on its life. Is it afraid of the Inquisition? It quotes a certain Robert Master who made burn a béguine. Its writings will be made public only well after its death. Hadewijch writes visions and letters, probably addressed to others béguines. It seems to exist a whole network “of friends of God” who exchange their ideas thus. Its poems are of a rare beauty, saying its love of god through courteous images.
