Habay

Habay (in Walloon Habâ ) is a common French-speaking of Belgium located in Walloon region in the Province of Luxembourg.

At July 1st, 2004, the total population of this commune is of 7.580 inhabitants (3 779 men and 3.801 women). The total surface area is of 103,32 km ² what gives a Population density of 73,36 inhabitants per km ².

History

The first traces of the presence of the man in the commune go up at the time Neolithic era. Flints of this period were found in abundance mainly in the south of the commune.

The many Gallo-Roman archeological sites inventoried on the whole of the commune testify to a first but important occupation as of to our era.

MAGEROY, which is one of the most important archeological sites of the area, is localized with little distance from the village of Habay-the-Old woman. It is at this place that drew up a Gallo-Roman farm of size, occupied of our era. In collaboration with the Walloon region and the commune of Habay, this exceptional site is in the course of excavation since a score of year by the group of local archeology (ARC-HAB).

Villages of the commune

The commune of Habay comprises ten villages: Anlier, Habay-the-New, Habay-the-Old woman, Hachy, Harinsart, Houdemont, Marbehan, Nantimont, Orsainfaing and Rulles.

Only the village of Anlier is located entirely in the Ardennes, the remainder of the commune is located primarily in Gaume. Habay-the-new is located at horse on the two areas, Rulle which runs in bottom of the village while being the border.
