Haakon VII of Norway
Haakon VII ( Christian Frederic Charles Georges Waldemar Axel ) (August 3rd 1872 - September 21st 1957), king of Norway (November 18th 1905 - September 21st 1957), resulting from the House of Oldenbourg. Born prince from Denmark, he was elected king of Norway after the dissolution of the union with the Sweden.
Biography
Prince Charles of Denmark was born the August 3rd 1872 with the Palate from Charlottenlund, close to Copenhagen. His/her father, the Crown prince to Denmark (the future King Frederic VIII), was the son of the King Christian IX and feue the Reine Louise of the Denmark. His/her mother, the Princess Consorte Heiress of Denmark, was the girl of the King Charles IV and feue the Reine Louise of Sweden.He married his German cousin the Princess Maud of Wales the July 22nd 1896 with the Palais of Buckingham. His/her father, the Prince de Galles, was the son of the Reine Victoria of the United Kingdom and fire the Prince Consort Albert. His/her mother, the Princess of Wales, was the sister of the father of Charles of Denmark.
Prince Charles and the Princesse Maud had a son:
- Alexandre Edouard Christian Frederic (July 2nd 1903 - January 17th 1991), the future Olav V.
After the dissolution of the union between the Sweden and the Norway in 1905, a committee of the Norwegian government proposed several members of European royal families like candidates with the throne of Norway. Little by little, Prince Charles became the privileged candidate: he had a son, the Prince Alexandre, who could succeed to him; and his wife, the Princesse Maud, belonged the British Royal family, which was advantageous for the lately independent Norway.
A Référendum confirmed that 79% of the Norwegian population were favorable to a monarchy, the others, largely minority, being favorable to a republic. Prince Charles officially saw himself offering the throne of Norway by the Parlement the November 18th 1905. After his/her grandfather the King Christian IX of Denmark had approved the proposal, Prince Charles became king de Norvège under the name of Haakon VII. He was crowned the June 22nd 1906 in the Cathedral of Nidaros, with Trondheim.
He lost his wife the November 20th 1938.
The Norway was invaded by the naval and air troops German the April 9th 1940. The king refused to subject to the wills invaders, who asked him to take for Prime Minister a Nazi, so that the Norway would have nothing any more been but one puppet with the hands of the IIIe Reich. The June 7th, it was evacuated by the English forces and was taken along to London, to form a government in exile in the British capital. It was summoned to abdicate the June 27th, without what all young Norwegian in age to fight would be sent in Concentration camp, but it declined the ultimatum.
During all the Second world war, it was thus a symbol of resistance against the German occupation, so that resistant Norwegian made H7 monogram the symbol of their cause and their solidarity and their fidelity towards their exiled king.
It fell into its bathroom in July 1955. This fall broke the femur to him and caused other complications, which forced it to remain in a wheel chair. Depressive, it lost any interest for what occurred in its country. He died the September 21st 1957 with Oslo. His death, his/her son succeeded to him.
He remains today as being one of the largest sovereigns than the Norway knew, having succeeded in maintaining free its young person and fragile country in spite of an unstable political environment.
