Hémione

The hémione , or wild ass of Asia, was a widespread ass wild of the Siberia to the Mongolia but does not live any more but in the plains of the north and south of the Plateau Tibetan with more than 4800 m of altitude. He measures nearly 1,2 m to the garrot. He belongs to the same family as the Ghorkhar of the India. Its habitat is threatened today and it is in the process of disappearance.

History

The term hémippe indicated a wild species of ass of Syria and Mésopotamie ( Equus hemippus ), which is currently regarded as synonym of Equus hemionus Kiang .

Literature

the shagreen evoked in the novel of Honore de Balzac is a skin of onager, whose magic capacity of exaucer all the wishes is dramatically supplied with a terrible curse: with each wish or wishes exaucé, skin narrowed, decreasing by as much the life expectancy of the person who has it. Balzac gives in its work a very erudite description of the onager and puts forth assumptions on the origin of the name of its skin.
